Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This week, we witnessed again the devastation of a part of our country from a hurricane. The floods that have resulted from Hurricane Harvey have taken lives, destroyed businesses and homes. As a result, many are displaced and have lost everything. Our Christian response to this disaster is to do what we can to lift these people’s crosses. Our prayers for the relief of their sufferings will certainly help lift those affected by the flood. Nevertheless, the road to recovery for many of them will be a long one and will require financial assistance and support. With this in mind, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has requested, and Bishop Campbell has approved, a special collection from the Diocese of Columbus for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. These funds will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA and other Catholic agencies as they reach out to provide humanitarian aid in Texas and other affected parts of the Gulf Coast region. We will take this collection next weekend, September 9th-10th. Your generous response will be much appreciated.
We are about a month away from the Columbus Italian Festival, October 6th-8th and the Taste of Italy on Monday, October 2nd. This wonderful celebration of the Italian culture is in its 38th consecutive year. It is also an important community event and fund raiser for both parishes – the festival for St. John the Baptist and parking revenue for Sacred Heart. I ask each of you to mark your calendars and consider supporting and attending the festival.
I hope you all have an opportunity to enjoy the Labor Day holiday this Monday. May all our work begin with God’s inspiration and be done for His glory and honor. Our parish office will be closed in observance of the holiday.
