The block where Sacred Heart Church is located, bounded by Summit and Hamlet streets and First and Second avenues, has been Catholic Church property since 1852, when William Phelan of Lancaster willed it to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, from which the Diocese of Columbus was formed in 1868. Father John Eis, assistant pastor of Columbus Holy Cross Church, became Sacred Heart’s first pastor when the parish was formed in 1875 and stayed there for the next 44 years. A school, with a large hall, which was used as a church for nearly 50 years, was built under his direction and served the parish until 1957.
