Restoration, Repairs and Improvements

With our beautiful church approaching its 100th birthday, there are a great many areas that need maintenance, repair, or restoration. Through the generosity and support of our loyal Sacred Heart family, we can start addressing these. Below are the projects we have scheduled or ‘penciled in’ for this year. Others may be added this year, depending on funding. Information on other large, long term projects will follow soon.

MAIN ENTRY EXTERIOR LIMESTONE ARCH/EXTERIOR SOUTH WALL BUTTRESS CAPS

Cost: $14,900, Start: May 5, Completion: May 19

These repairs are complete. The detail and joint repair on the limestone arch is finished, and the buttress caps were resealed.

1ST AVENUE (SOUTH) EXTERIOR WALL TUCK POINTING

Cost: $12,000, Start: Est. October 2015, Completion: Est. October 2015

The West wall of the church was repaired an tuck pointed last year to stop water leaks and structural/cosmetic damage. While the South wall is not as bad as the West wall was, this needs to be addressed soon.

VESTIBULE PLASTER REPAIR

Cost: $2,000, Start: April 27, Completion: April 28

As our Italian Village neighborhood experiences a renewal and rebirth, so must our church. To create a good first impression, and welcoming environment, we are repairing and freshening the Vestibule. The plaster needed attention before we can repaint.

VESTIBULE REPAINTING

Cost: $4,500 (Total), Start: May 6, Completion: Phase I May 9, Phase II TBA

Gone is the gray paint scheme, and its dark, cold, somewhat institutional look. We have replicated the colors and decorative designs that are in the Chapel to create a warmer, welcoming feel, and tie this area in with the rest of the church. Phase I, the basic walls and ceiling, $3,000. Phase II, the detailed striping and design, will follow when funds, around $1,500, are available.

FLOORING IN THE VESTIBULE, BEHIND THE LAST ROW OF PEWS, AND IN FRONT OF THE ALTER

Completed May 21

The carpet in these three areas was in bad shape. Not only did it look bad, institutional, and dirty, but it was something of a trip hazard. For cost and time, we elected to re-carpet these areas. We think you will agree, it makes a huge improvement.

AUDIO SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS

Cost: Est. $8,500, Start: TBD, Completion: Est. Mid June 2015

To preserve the renowned acoustics of Sacred Heart, but improve broadcast of the spoken word, we think we’ve found a great Bose sound system. This was the one we tested the weekend of May 22nd. Details are still being worked out.

KNEELERS IN THE BACK HALF OF THE CHURCH

Cost: $9,000. Completed June 29.

We were able to negotiate a lower cost to replace all of the kneelers at once, enhancing the safety, comfort and quiet of the sanctuary.
